Ol' Burro's Almanack

Welcome back my friends! This glorious June weather we are enjoying makes one glad to be out and about, and ever so reluctant to go back indoors.

Even with this lovely weather as a backdrop, it is once again my sad duty to inform you of the passing of another of the founders of our little town, Judge Andrew G., aged 104. he will be sorely missed, and it was asked of me to give the eulogy. Do him proud, said my dear wife, as he had known you both man and boy. With that, I sat down to compose my speech, which I will share with you, before we leave for the services.

My friends, four days ago we lost a very old, and very dear friend. As I look out upon you gathered here, I see many of his friends and relatives, deeply affected by their loss. He lived amongst those who both liked, and disliked him, for he was both open, and honest, and dutifully unmasked the wrongdoers, and scoundrels, without regard for position, or wealth, and some of those may be pleased by the news of his passing. He was no friend of power, as he had observed in his youth, the ill use of power.

He was at the top of his profession, yet he spent more time hearing, and reconciling differences without once charging a fee. He was just, when he sat as a judge. Though he was stern, and severe, he was a fair man, and compassionate by nature, and slow to punish. He was a great friend of the poor, and was often known to help those in need.

He was a tender husband, a caring parent, and a good friend. His free way of dealing with subjects of religion may have offended some, yet he was a God fearing man, known for his fondness of both mercy, and justice.

He spent his final years in the grasp of an ongoing illness, with uncommon cheerfulness, and courage. He endured his final illness not with the false sense of bravado, but with the composure, and tranquility of a life well lived. Even at the end, he maintained his understanding and regard for his family, and friends. He will be missed by one and all.

With that said my friends, I must beg to take my leave of you, for it is time for the services, I am quite certain that our next visit will be under more cheerful circumstances, and I remain...
